three months

Whew...we have all recovered and the quarantine has been lifted.  In the midst of all that, Oliver turned three months old!  We celebrated by helping him (and us) sleep through the night.  As you may or may not remember, we did the Ferber thing with Owen when he was around nine months old.  The only reason we waited was because we didn't know about ferberization and once it worked, we couldn't believe we didn't try it sooner.  We firmly believe this is why Owen was and still is a wonderful sleeper.

The book actually suggests starting when the baby is four months old, but Oliver was already doing so well, we decided to give it a go a month early.  It's been a little over a week, and so far the results are good.  We've only made it to the critical 15 minutes on two or three occasions.  Right now he goes to bed around 9-9:30 and sleeps until 7:00.  If he wakes at all, it's usually around 5:00.  Sometimes he only cries for a minute or two and that's all we hear.  Sometimes he moans and we don't know what that's about.  He's usually not awake, so I like to think he's dreaming.  I think he would sleep longer in the morning, but with our schedules, 7:00 works well.

quarantine

We've had a rough few days around here.  As I said  in the previous post, Owen was sick last weekend.  I started feeling bad on Thursday, and almost came home from work early.  I stuck it out, but by the time I got home I was certain I had the full-on stomach bug.  I was still ill on Friday, so I worked from home.  I stayed as far away from the kids as possible, hoping I wouldn't pass this back to Owen, or on to Oliver.

I didn't have coffee on Friday, so I also battled a raging headache by the afternoon. By Saturday morning, Brig had gotten the bug.  I was feeling a little better, so I started taking care of the kids while she tried to rest.

Last night I got up with Oliver twice around midnight, and every 15 minutes from 2:00-4:00.  She relieved me at 4:00 and I went to bed until 8:00.  We are not 100% but are on the mend.  Both kids have a runny/stuffy nose but so far no stomach issues.

catching up

Alright...now that the holiday post is out of the way, let's see if I can wrap up the last few weeks in one post.  These are in no particular order:

  • Oliver is really holding his head up well, and almost sitting up unassisted in the Bumbo.  He smiles constantly and is really starting to "talk".
  • He does not like routine.  Despite our best efforts to get him on a sleep/feeding schedule, so far he hasn't had one day (or night) that was like the one before.  He got his first cold last week, so we have been waiting for that to pass before trying a little ferberization.  He did sleep from 9:30 - 7:30 last night so maybe that's a positive sign?
  • Owen and I had "Owen and Daddy's day of fun!" on Saturday.  That was a Friends reference btw.  Anyway, we went to Moe's for lunch, hit Palmetto Moon and World Market and went to the movies to see Chipwrecked.  It was his second time at the movie theater and he did pretty well.  He didn't care for the 37 previews before the movie started.  I wonder where he gets his lack of patience?
  • At bedtime that night he vomited, and it didn't stop until 2:30 in the morning.  We lost count around episode #7 (i think) but I can tell you we went through all sets of his sheets and almost all his pajamas.  He was fine the next day and even took a three hour nap.
  • I registered him for soccer this week and practice starts mid February.  He's excited right now, but I can't help but think he will freeze (literally and figuratively) when he hits the field.  Regardless, it will be a learning experience for all of us.
  • I finally started running again two weeks ago after being off since September.  I'm going to be blunt and say it sucks to start over, but I already feel better.  I didn't start from week 1, but with some trial and error skipped to week 4 and my body seems to be ok with that.  This is the first time I have ran outside in the cold but I am determined to keep going.

blame it on the newborn

He's still a newborn, right?  Well, let's just say we are still, uh, adjusting to life.  I know the holidays have come and gone, but I finally got around to going through our pics.  Enjoy!

that didn't last long

This whole sleeping through the night thing didn't take.  We thought we were finally on the other side, but Oliver decided to switch things up to make it interesting.

ALL NIGHT LONG

That's right folks!  Oliver slept all night long...from 10-7.  Be back later with Christmas pics.
