Trimming the tree

We started decorating for Christmas on Saturday. You would think it wouldn't take that long but we're still working. It doesn't help that Owen now has a bad cough and fever. Yesterday he found some old (and not very attractive) garland and contributed to the tree trimming. He was very proud of his work and stood still long enough to snap this pic. Here he is giving his best "cheese". Excuse the cockatoo on the back of his head.

Giving thanks early

Today Owen had a "Thanksgiving Feast" at school. Brig and I were both able to attend, and although it started off shaky, we all had a great time in the end. They had turkey (roll-ups), cheese cubes and assorted fruit. Owen has been very picky lately, so he wasn't too interested until they broke out the cookies. He never refuses a cookie.

Mountain Trip 2009

What a trip! We left out last Wednesday around 1:00 pm. The perfect time for Owen to sleep in the car. And he did...for an entire 45 minutes. Considering he normally sleeps 3-3.5 hrs each afternoon, this was disappointing. We went on this same trip a year ago but he was only 8 months old so we didn't know how he would react to being awake in the car for so long. We did think ahead and brought DVD's, CD's and some favorite books. We watched several videos but he eventually lost interest when he realized we didn't have video on demand in the car. He was a real trooper until we got about an hour from the house.

We had just pulled over in Hendersonville, NC to run through the Krispy Kreme to get donuts for breakfast the next morning. Brig was driving at this point and she had just pulled into a spot when Owen got car sick. I won't subject you to the gory details...just understand this is the worst smell ever. And since we were on a road trip, you are pretty much stuck with it until you reach your final destination. BTW, we did clean up the mess and change his clothes. By the time we reached the house we were pretty much exhausted. We gave Owen plain toast for dinner and I'm sure you can guess what Brig and I had for dinner...yep...a donut. There was no way we were stopping on the way up the mountain to get dinner as we had initially planned. After Owen finished dinner, he had the most thorough bath of his life and went to bed.

The next day we had planned to venture over to Gatlinburg and check out the Aquarium. In case you haven't heard, there was a rock slide on I-40 a few weeks ago, and it just happened to be seven miles above our exit. We could have taken the Blue Ridge Parkway, but since we don't know with 100% certainty what made Owen car sick, we didn't want to take the chance. Besides, the car seat required several washings and we eventually had to use Dreft to get the smell out. We just stayed at the house and played in the yard. Before I forget, we had the most amazing weather during our stay. It was in the mid 60's and sunny every day.

My parents came up that afternoon during Owen's nap. Thank goodness they have a car seat too and a car big enough to carry all of us around comfortably.

Friday night we went to ride the Polar Express in Bryson City. Owen loves trains so we were really excited to have this opportunity. He's never seen the Polar Express but that didn't really matter. They told us to pick up our tickets no later than an hour before the ride. We got there at 5:15 and the ride wasn't until 6:30. We planned to eat somewhere close during the time in between. The lady at the ticket counter told us we better be waiting to board the train at least 30 minutes ahead of time which meant we didn't have time to go and eat. After some debate we decided to just get Owen some fries at the depot. I know, really nutritious. We did have some applesauce with us, so he had that too. The rest of us just waited to get something on the way home.

We rode the train through the dark for about an hour. We saw Christmas lights, sang songs, drank some not-so-tasty hot cocoa and at the very end Santa Claus came on board to give each kid a jingle bell. Owen really enjoyed the ride but his favorite part were the songs. This kid loves music.

The next afternoon we went over to Dillard, GA to eat and see the animals at their little zoo.

This is the two of us looking at an airplane.

We made it home without Owen getting sick again. He slept for the first two hours, and this time we eliminated the movies and the books just in case. In the end it was a good trip, just not one we intend to take on a more frequent basis.

Halloween 2009

Owen had a really fun Halloween this year. He was extremely interested in the "treats". We hit my parents house first. We took two pictures and our camera battery died. Luckily my parents had a camera but we don't have those pics yet. We met two clowns in the back yard and got really sweaty considering it was still in the mid 80's before the sun went down.

Next we went to Josh and Sam's house. Since the camera battery wasn't fully charged we didn't get too many pics with them, and the ones we got were blurry.

After taking Owen's costume on and off several times, we decided to loosen the car seat straps and keep moving. Here's Mickey eating some of his loot on the way to our final destination at Brig's parents house.

Scarecrows

Saturday we went to lunch and to finally see the scarecrows in our town square. And the one thing Owen wasn't interested in...the scarecrows. Some of them were way too scary for him so we moved on quickly. As I've mentioned before, he loves pumpkins so every time we saw some he had to stop and try to thief one. He's very good at understanding we can't take everything home and simply says "bye bye punkin".
